The Colorado Department of Revenue has begun notifying roughly 20,000 taxpayers who may be entitled to a combined $8 million in unclaimed state tax refunds. This initiative, launched in partnership with Gov. Jared Polis, the New Practice Lab from New America, and Gary Community Ventures, uses existing taxpayer data to create prefilled returns—making it easier for residents to claim what’s theirs.
The program stems from a 2024 law requiring the state to help taxpayers amend prior returns. Notices will continue through June 30, 2026, giving Coloradans plenty of time to act.
Governor Polis emphasized that “filing taxes is too costly and complicated,” noting that the new system allows eligible taxpayers to complete their form online in less than 10 minutes—returning money to residents faster and with less hassle.
State Representative Emily Sirota (D-Denver) praised Colorado’s leadership in cutting through bureaucracy, saying the initiative ensures more residents receive the refunds they’re owed.
Eligible taxpayers who receive notices will find simple instructions for reviewing and filing their prefilled amended return, with refunds expected within a few weeks after submission.
