A Christmas Tree Adventure in Colorado Springs: Make Memories in the Woods 🌲✨

by Nicole Strom 11/13/2024

For some Coloradans, finding the perfect Christmas tree isn't about picking one from a store but about heading into the wild for a truly memorable experience. If you're ready to make a holiday tradition out of cutting your own tree, now is the time to plan!

The U.S. Forest Service recently announced that tree-cutting permits are now available for certain national forests, including areas most accessible to Front Range families: Pike and San Isabel National Forests and Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. This means you can make your holiday season special while also contributing to forest health.

Where and When to Cut Your Tree:

  • Pike and San Isabel National Forests: Permits are $20 and available at recreation.gov. The Pikes Peak Ranger District, near Colorado Springs, is especially popular for families heading out around Woodland Park, with no permit quotas! Tree cutting starts the day after Thanksgiving and runs through mid-December.
  • Other Areas: The San Carlos District near Cañon City, South Park Ranger District around Lake George, and Salida and Leadville ranger districts will also have permits available. Grand County’s Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests are already open, with Larimer County's season beginning Nov. 24.

Why Cut Your Own Tree?

According to Troy Heithecker, regional forester, “Cutting Christmas trees improves forest health and reduces wildfire risk. The permit system is designed to thin densely populated tree stands, allowing the remaining trees to grow larger and creating open areas that benefit wildlife.” It's not just about the joy of bringing home your own tree; it's about giving back to the environment, too.

Essential Resources for Your Adventure:

  • Permits & Information: Visit recreation.gov to purchase your permit and download maps of designated cutting areas.
  • Pikes Peak Ranger District Info: Find maps and guidelines specific to the areas around Woodland Park at Pikes Peak Ranger District.
  • Weather & Safety Tips: Before heading out, check the weather forecast at NOAA and prepare with the right gear, such as warm clothing, saws, and first-aid kits.
  • Local Guides & Gear: Get recommendations for outdoor guides and gear shops in Colorado Springs, like Mountain Chalet for all your adventure needs.

Make this holiday season unforgettable with a tree-cutting adventure that’s fun for the whole family. It’s time to create those “memories that last through generations,” as Forest Service Chief Randy Moore put it.
