Military families know that a PCS is about much more than moving household goods. It often means leaving behind careers, professional licenses, schools, childcare, and support systems.
That's why I was excited to see President Trump sign an Executive Order on August 3, 2026, establishing the President's Military Spouse Commission. The commission will focus on identifying ways to improve employment opportunities, licensing portability, education, childcare, healthcare, and PCS transitions for military spouses and their families.
While the Executive Order does not immediately create new benefits or change existing laws, it signals a renewed national focus on reducing the barriers military spouses face every time military orders arrive.
Here in Colorado, we've already seen what meaningful change can look like.
In 2020, Colorado passed House Bill 20-1326, creating one of the nation's most comprehensive occupational licensing pathways for military spouses. Eligible military spouses with an active license in good standing from another state may qualify for a temporary Colorado license, allowing many to begin working much sooner after relocating.
This issue is especially meaningful to me.
Before becoming a REALTOR®, I was an Army spouse who experienced 13 PCS moves over 24 years. I also had the privilege of serving on the Military Spouse Career Coalition, which worked alongside Colorado legislators to help advance this important legislation. Watching Colorado become a national leader in supporting military spouse careers remains one of the accomplishments I'm most proud to have been part of.
Military readiness depends on strong families. Helping military spouses continue their careers strengthens families, supports our communities, and ultimately benefits our service members.
